If you’re like me, chances are you’ll have someone at your Thanksgiving table next week who really believes the myth that highly-paid government workers are behind all that ails America.  You’ve also probably realized by now that facts don’t work with these folks. 

You can show them the study showing that public workers actually make less than private workers, or you can let them know that a third of public workers have a pension because they don’t get Social Security.  But chances are you’ll have an easier time picking all those raisins out of the stuffing than convincing them with facts.

But why fight, when thanks to the Center for Media and Democracy (CMD) you can just agree with them?  That’s right, CMD just launched a new series exposing America’s “highest paid government workers.” 

Only thing is, it’s not who you think. 

You see, corporations that take over public services often slash wages and benefits for their workers to save money.  But the CEOs of these companies are making millions from taxpayer-funded contracts, making them the highest paid “government” workers in America.

This week, CMD introduced us to America’s highest paid “teacher,” Ron Packard, the CEO of K-12, Inc.  Thanks to taxpayers, Mr. made more than $19 million between 2009 and 2012 by taking over public schools across the country.  K-12, Inc. took in $780 million during that same period from taxpayer funds.

By the way, when your pesky dinner guests wants to rail against teachers, you can helpfully point out that unlike Mr. Packard, the average teacher in America makes a little under $37,000 a year.
